How to Find Grants for Your Small Business
Most business owners search for the word 'grants' and give up after a page of directories. A narrower, activity-led search finds far more usable opportunities in less time.

Decide what the money is for
Funders award money for defined activities: equipment, hiring, training, research, energy efficiency, exporting, premises. Write down the activity and the amount before you search. That sentence becomes your search term and, later, the core of your application.
Search by what you do
Search 'bakery', 'childcare', 'manufacturing', 'clean energy' rather than 'grants for business'. Sector words appear in the funder's own text; the word 'grant' appears everywhere and narrows nothing.
The GrantBridge Grant Finder expands related terms automatically, so a search for daycare also considers childcare, early childhood and preschool programmes, and returns only real opportunities from live data.
Filter on eligibility before you read anything else
- Is your business type eligible?
- Are you inside the funder's geographic area?
- Does your sector qualify?
- Do you meet size limits on employees or revenue?
- Is your intended use of the money an allowable cost?
Verify against the official source
Open the funder's own page for every shortlisted opportunity. Deadlines shift, programmes close early and terms change. A third-party listing is a signpost, not the rulebook.
Watch for scams
No legitimate grant programme asks you to pay a fee to receive an award, and none guarantees approval. Treat both as a reason to walk away.
